Saturday Blues: Friars short-changed on Big East dates

Oswin Erhunmwunse will be one of PC’s leaders this season

It’s rare to welcome a college basketball schedule and feel a bit cheated. Some Providence basketball fans may hold that feeling in 2025-26.

The Friars won’t be short on iron, not with the 20 Big East games Kim English’s team will face. But over the last decade the secret sauce that’s helped Providence basketball at the Amica Mutual Pavilion become a bit of a phenomenon has been quite simple. Fill the building, pack the sidelines with frenzied fans, get plenty of beer into the students and splash everything on national television.

Oh, and make sure the biggest games are played on Saturday afternoons.

Well, that last piece will be in shorter supply this season. The Friars will host the Rhode Island Rams on a Saturday but once Big East play begins there will only be three Saturday games (game times remain TBD): Georgetown, St. John’s and DePaul.

Now the TV networks aren’t dumb. They know what works best for Providence home games and certainly demand a few Saturdays. That’s why Ed Cooley (Georgetown) and Rick Pitino (St. John’s) will both be weekend guests.

Providence played four Saturday home games in conference play a year ago (Seton Hall, Georgetown, Villanova, UConn) so there is only one game difference this season. One complicating factor? The TV schedule makers. Friars do play two Friday night home games, versus Seton Hall and Creighton. Slide those games into a Saturday and everyone would be happy but the Friday night window is becoming a staple in the Big East due to TV requests.
