Rhody Rams begin `21 Class with Abdou Samb

By KEVIN McNAMARA

After cleaning up on the transfer wire last spring, David Cox isn’t looking for a very large class of new recruits in the Class of 2021 but he’s off to an early start nonetheless.

Abdou Samb, a strong 6-8 forward out of Maryland, verbally committed to Rhody in early September. A second team All-Stater at Frederick Douglass High and a member of the DC Premier grassroots program, Samb joins a host of DMV-area players in Kingston. Thanks to Cox’s D.C. roots and the same background of assistant coach Kevin Sutton, the Rams have established a potent pipeline to the D.C. ares. Samb joins Jermaine Harris, and Maryland transfers Makhi Mitchell and Makhel Mitchell from the DC Premier program. Junior Antwan Walker and incoming freshman guard Ishmael Leggett also hail from the D.C. area.

Samb was also hearing from George Mason, East Carolina, Towson and other schools when he selected URI.

The only seniors on URI’s 2020-21 roster are star guard Fatts Russell and Jeremy Sheppard, a shooting guard who sat out last season after junior college.
